Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club team
5th XI
Captain :
Lee Freeman
Following several years of captaining the 3rd and 4th XIs, Lee is now the Club Treasurer and will lead the 5th XI for the first time in 2009 after being a virtual non playing vice captain in 2008. With the words "play straight" ringing in his ears every time he walks to the wicket, 80's man is looking forward to a relaxing summer opening the batting and standing at first slip
Players
Neil Baynes
'Binsy' is more of a spectator really than a player, but he normally finds time for the odd game to wield the willow. Often seen supporting the first team, with a spare rib in one hand and lager in the other, Binsy is the barbecue king of Sawbo.
Adam Bishop
A member of the Saracens Rugby Academy so Bish is restricted to occasional games only. Intimidating fast bowler who bowls just short of a length, hopefully we will see more of Bish in 2009. He can also hit some mighty blows with the willow.
Colin Bishop
'Col' only took up the game in 2005 and missed much of 2006 due to injury. Still very much learning the game, Colin likes to hit out. I think even he would admit that his forward defence is a bit ropey. Always keen to help out, Colin answered the call for players to help at the start of last season by painting the tennis club wall white. Top man Col!
Adam Boxall
Adam is one of the colts coaches who played one game in 2007 and may be called upon to help out in future!
Byron Charles
South African who moved to the area last year and played for the first time since school a couple of years ago. Has now moved back to his homeland so probably won't see him him much in future! Byron is a top bloke.
Alex Cleaves
The older Cleaves brother. Has taken up wicket-keeping and is a top order batsman. One for the future.
Andrew Cleaves
Took up cricket in 2006 and played in almost all the 5th XI games that season, winning the player of the year award in the process. After pulling a mussle in 2007 he has now apparently given up the game, for now anyway! Father of Alex and Matthew.
George Delaney
George is a very promising player, who has a wonderful left arm action and can bowl with pace. Worked hard on his run-up and length over the course of this season, injured a few opposing batsman who were scared of him, and played a game in the 2s at the end of the season without looking out of place. A potential 1st-teamer.
Simon Dewhurst
Keen, hard working cricketer who enjoys batting and bowling. Bowls very slowly on a nagging line and length, with minimal bounce, so very difficult to get away. One of the best fielders in the club.
Andrew Fountain
New player for 2008.
Sam Fuller
Young player who netted a few times last season and looked quite good!
Glenn Gostling
Gossa is a former first team bowler who now plays in the lower sides to prove to his son that he can actually play cricket. Had a hip replacement two years ago - he still walks a bit funny though. If anyone wants a job in insurance, Gossa's your man.
Stephen Hagger
Joined at the end of the 2008 season, a powerful batsman who plays for Furneux Pelham on Sundays.
Robert Heslop
Young allrounder who plays straight and bowls slow/medium pace. Often plays on Sunday at short notice. Under 15 player of the year for 2008, his batting has come on a lot, and Rob should be looking to make his mark in senior cricket in 2009.
Aled Hills
We don't see that much of Aled these days as he's often "working" or doing other things, but he's still got it and hopefully will play more cricket in 2009.
Tony Hook
Tony was invaluable for the 5th and 6th teams this season as he ownes a car and was willing to drive! Showed great spirit and was a main bowler in the 5th XI, winning the coveted player of the year award in the process.....Constant battle in the Hook household with Matthew to be top cricketer !!
Andrew Howard
One of the younger players at the club.Took a 5-6 in his first season at the club. His fielding is a weak area and his batting seeing though he only top scored with 6 runs last season. However his spin bowling has come on. The shyer version of Chris because of course no-one can be that big headed.
Gabriel Inch
Lots of potential from this young wicketkeeper/batsman who is working his way into the senior sides and has played some Development XI games in 2008.
Bob Jones
Bob has played sporadically for Sawbo for many years and plays his regular cricket at Sheering. Useful medium pace bowler who moves the ball around a bit.
Vijay Krishnarayan
Vijay was recruited by Carl into the 5th team for its inaugural 2006 season, but Vijay ended up playing some 4th team games as well. He plays a straight bat, can keep wicket. Captained 6th team in 2008 and 2009.
Dan Lane
Dan graduated as a Sawbridgeworth junior and is one of the hottest bowling prospects in the club: quick, unpredictable and aggressive. Unfortuanately this also describes his batting, from ball one! NEVER checks the web and often difficult to contact (hint, hint)!
John Lane
Andrew Meadmore
Club Chairman since 1998, 'Meado' is the driving force behind Sawbo and has worked tirelessly over the past ten years to develop the club into what it is now. Assasination plots from other clubs are more than mere speculation.
'Meado' retired from playing in the late 1990s due to a bad hip, but has since had a replacement and now plays the odd game to help out in the lower sides. Skippered the threes in the 90s, Colts organiser, ex-Membership Chairman - is there anything this man doesn't do? Bowls 'off spin' and bats middle order. This man will be knighted soon, despite questionable dress sense.
Dave Molt
"Molty" plays a lot of golf (off 4 so it is rumoured) so doesn't have the time to play cricket week-in-week-out, but is often willing to help out the lower sides at short notice and dig Carl out of a hole. Can bowl on the spot from ball one.
Rob Moorcroft
Henry Morter
Very keen player, Henry has improved a lot in the past two years, and is often working on his game at nets. His batting has improved massively (look at the stats!) and was only just short of his first 50 earlier this season. Bats and bowls, listens to rock music, and doesn't say much except to his peers.
Laurence Morter
Slightly madder, older brother of Henry. Bowls, bats, fields, keeps wicket on the odd occasion. General loon. Has cut off his good hair and got in shape.
Hoping that he gets a good run out in 2010 after being under-used in 2009
Took 9-20
, have I told you about it?
Dan Reynolds
Took the first ever 6th XI wicket in 2007 and really came on in 2008, bowling great line and length, to claim the 6th Player Of The Year award. Followed this up with 5th XI Player Of The Year in 2009.
Charlie Rudkin
Younger brother of Joe, Charlie is just as cocky. He bats, bowls and keeps, and is set to be a major Sawbo C.C. player of the future, although needs to work on mental toughness if he is to succeed.
Samantha Simmonds
Herts Ladies player, promising all-rounder and keen to make her mark in senior cricket. Could teach her step father, Lee Freeman, a thing or two in the art of "playing down the v", although her major flaw is she never lets anyone know of her availability!
Mark Small
Mark was away last summer teaching in Australia, and has come back with an Aussie accent! Has had knee problems in the past (too much Aussie Rules), Mark is a biffer who smashes the ball from the off to all areas of the park. Put some shrimps on the barbee mate!
Jonathan Smith
Occasional player who Carl drafted in last year. Scored quite a few runs and would be useful if he played again in the fifths this season.
Alex Syed
Promising allrounder who models himself on Nikki Clarke. His batting has come on a lot in the last year and he has already scored some vital runs for both the 4s and Devt XI in 2008.
Douglas Vears
Not really a cricketer, more a parent who volunteered some of his time to help Carl out. Coaches the colts on a Sunday morning and often seen enjoying a beer at the club.
Matthew Wallace
Carl Waring
“JC” answered an end of season request for players in 2004 and hasn’t looked back since. Coach to the Under 11’s, on the field of play his wicket taking capability is setting a lot of talk going. In his first game got the latest Herts County recruit out first ball; and went on to take a “5 for”. Captaining the 5ths for the third straight year. Led them to promotion last year and although as Carl admits he is not known for his batting skills, he can block with the best of them!
Tom Waring
14 year old colt who has featured in several matches for the 3rds, 4ths, 5ths and Sunday 'A''s and 'B''s. Back with seam after a flirtation with spin. Hard hitting batsman who is learning the art of the patience. Lots of promise and a mean catcher on the boundary rope!
Patrick Williams
Has become more and more involved in senior cricket in the past couple of years, Pat is a batsman/wicketkeeper who can also bowl the odd over!
Nick Wright
Solid 5th team bowler who is usually reliable to bowl line and length and can bat a bit as well.
