Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club team
1st XI Sunday
Captain :
Steve Ashman
Talented opening batsman who cemented his place in the 1st team as opening batsman last seaon. Should be looking to improve his league average of 17 this season if he applies himself. A true teenager who rarely emits more than the odd grunt, Steve likes a drink.
Players
Matt Birch
A true clubman who was Club Captain for five years and always gives 100% to the cause. Has been a key batsman in the 1st team for the past twelve years, scoring over 10,000 runs in that time. Also holds the club record for highest score - 223 against Hutton in 1997. Had a variety of random injuries last year, Matt is 2nd XI captain in 2007.
Also shows prowess on the dart board, Matt is known as "The Judge" - and is one of few players to beat Paul "Two Darts" James.
Chris Bird
"Birdy" has a bright future ahead of him and bowls a consistant line and length from close to the stumps. Pushing for a 2s place this year. Likes to talk up his batting and this may not be all hot air; a possible allrounder in the making.
Simon Dewhurst
Keen, hard working cricketer who enjoys batting and bowling. Bowls very slowly on a nagging line and length, with minimal bounce, so very difficult to get away. One of the best fielders in the club.
Cass Edwards
Cass used to be an allrounder but is now an occasional attacking batsman. A former GB triple jumper, this year he has again decided to skipper the 4th XI side, and is relishing the challenge offered to get the 4th's promoted and above all to do so with a degree of fun.
Joe Edwards
This is a 110% effort man. His game keeps improving week on week, even though to hear Chris Pask’s verbal volleys (on the field) an even higher standard seems to be expected. Batting is highly underrated with a number of big scores to his name when required. Could easily be a 500 runs / year man with 30 / 40 victims. Town Fields could see a lot of this young man in the next 10 years. Won most improved player in 2006 and now vice of the Sunday 1st team.
Aled Hills
We don't see that much of Aled these days as he's often "working" or doing other things, but he's still got it and hopefully will play more cricket in 2009.
Dan Lane
Dan graduated as a Sawbridgeworth junior and is one of the hottest bowling prospects in the club: quick, unpredictable and aggressive. Unfortuanately this also describes his batting, from ball one! NEVER checks the web and often difficult to contact (hint, hint)!
Charlie Mann
Promising young batsman/wicketkeeper who can also bowl a bit. Charlie scored his first 50 for the Development XI last season and plays as goalkeeper for Arsenal youth. Has forced his way into the 3rd XI as keeper now Fordy has retired.
Tony Marshall
Former Club Captain with a versatile style which means can bat anywhere from 1 to 7. Often the victim of running himself out due to the slowness of the other batsman. Had an exploding finger in 2001, but recovered to regain place in 2nd XI, and has become a Sunday run pig. Now residing in Wiltshire due to an obsession for combine harvesters, but still finds time to play occasional games at Town Fields.
Scott Noonan
A 'Mr Dependable' with his bowling. Very much an 'English' bowler who can make it swing when there is some shine on the ball wth his round-arm action. His overs are tight, and he gets 2/3 wkts for his skippers every game, and the odd "Michelle". Has the ability to spawn jewelry stones, with multiplication in his ear stud very evident in the last few years. Family telephone answering message is the most entertaining on the circuit.
Andrew O'Donovan
Talented youngster who was the main 3rd team spinner last season, Andrew bowls left arm leggers, and can bowl the wrong-un as well. Works hard on his game and is sure to be a major player for Sawbo in the coming years. His batting is coming on now and a first senior 50 was followed up very quickly with more in 2008.
Rhys Purnell
Rhys has enormous potential with the bat and has become a top-fielder in the last year or so. Top-order batsman who likes the ball coming on, a potential first-teamer in a couple of years. Apparently a good golfer as well.
Nick Sheffield
Nick played a couple of Sunday games at the end of 2008, and plays on Saturdays for St Margaretsbury. Strong prospect with bat and ball, this youngster is one to watch. Gets emotional on the field of play!
